Middlesex University graduate William Lakin caught our eye last month when he was awarded a coveted Yellow Pencil at the D&AD Student Awards. Our Creative Director, Vicky Lawton, was judging the Photography category and made special mention of Lakin’s portraiture.
His awarded image, a trio of boys entitled ‘Martyn, Sean and Jacob’, was part of an ongoing series shot in Great Yarmouth called Florida Club, intended to reflect the confused identity of a town struggling to adapt to change.
We learn a bit more about this budding photographic talent as he shares further images from the series.
WHEN DID YOUR LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY BEGIN, WHAT DREW YOU TO IT?
I started shooting when I was about 16 because a few people I knew would do local band promotional shots so I originally wanted to do that. I used a compact and then my uncle saw some pictures I had taken and bought me my first DSLR, which I cant thank him enough for.
